There’s no doubt about it: J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan is so hot right now. Neverland’s favorite son is already the subject of two different movies in development, and now Deadline reports that another story about the ultimate Lost Boy is in the works at Disney, the studio that brought us Peter’s animated adventures way back in 1953. Jesse Wigutow will adapt Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s book Peter and the Starcatchers, which is another Peter Pan origin story that sets Peter and the infamous Lost Boys on an adventure to make sure that magical “starstuff” stays out of the hands of the evil pirate Black Stache.

My first reaction to this was to roll my eyes, but this story is currently running as a successful Broadway play and just received nine Tony Award nominations, so perhaps there’s something to this story that separates it from all the other Pan stories …

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are going to be packing heat. The duo have signed up to do a cop buddy movie. Bridesmaids Paul Feig will direct the as yet untitled project. Katie Dippold of Parks and Recreation acclaim is writing the screenplay. The movie details the strained working relationship between an uptight FBI agent, played by Oscar winner Bullock, and an unconventional Boston cop, played by Oscar nominee McCarthy. The movie is bit of a reunion for Feig and McCarthy, who worked together on 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids. Feig will executive produce. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Dylan Clark will produce the Fox distributed film. Dippold is repped by WME. Feig, McCarthy and Bullock are all repped by CAA.

The march of technology amazes me. Yeah, I’m an old guy, but it still surprises me when I realize that the amount of storage that used to fill a data center can now fit in my pocket. G-Technology’s G-Drive mobile (made by Hitachi, US$199.99 MSRP for 1 TB) is the perfect example of mass storage in a small, silent box. Read on for a review of this mobile companion and a chance to win one!

Design

There’s not much too say in terms of the design of the G-Drive mobile — it’s a slim metallic box 5 inches long, a little over 3 inches wide, and about 3/4 of an inch high. There’s no power port; the G-Drive is bus-powered by either FireWire (400/800) or USB 2.0. The device comes with cables for each connection. A single white LED on the front of the drive indicates when it is powered up and in use.

On the inside, there’s a 5400 RPM 1 TB drive with an 8 MB cache. For speed, I’d much rather see a 7200 RPM drive, but that would most likely drive up both the cost and power requirements of the drive. However, as you’ll see with the benchmarks, this is still a pretty fast drive despite the slower rotation speed of the disk.

The G-Drive mobile also comes in 500 MB ($149.99 MSRP) and 750 MB ($159.99) versions, although I’m at a loss why someone wouldn’t want to double their capacity for just fifty bucks more. I found the drive to run a bit hot — I had placed my iPhone on top of the drive at one point, and when I answered a call I wondered why the phone was so hot…

As with other drives of this ilk, the G-Drive mobile is almost completely silent.

Benchmarks

TUAW uses a standard industry benchmark to compare the I/O capabilities of disks and arrays. The benchmark uses the AJA System Test, which simulates reading and writing video. The specific test I used was the Disk Read/Write test, also known as the DiskWhackTest, set at a video frame size of 720 x 486 8-bit and a file size of 128 MB.

The drive read speeds were surprisingly fast in our benchmarks, matching almost every FireWire drive that we’ve tested (only one is shown below for space considerations). When it came to USB 2.0 read speeds, the G-Drive mobile was slightly faster than the competition across the board. Write speeds were slower for the G-Drive when connected via FireWire 800, while almost identical to other drives with a USB 2.0 connection.

Conclusion and Giveaway

If you’re the owner of a MacBook Pro and have an available FireWire 800 port, or have a FireWire-equipped desktop Mac you’d like to back up while keeping a lot of available desk space, then the G-Drive mobile will fill your requirements. Those who only have USB 2.0 ports on their Macs should spend their money on less expensive USB-only drives that offer read/write speeds in the same range as the G-Drive mobile.

Republique is an upcoming iOS title that’s made a lot of noise by getting funded on Kickstarter recently, to the tune of half a million dollars, but I’ve had one nagging question about it: How exactly are they going to distribute the app to all of their backers? The most obvious solution would be to put a password gate inside of an app, but Apple doesn’t allow that. If you have to lock content in your app, then you’re clearly selling it outside of the App Store, which means you’re dodging Apple’s 30% cut. So what’s their plan? Republique hasn’t yet said, only that it’s still being decided.

Fortunately, however, here’s the answer. The folks behind Zombies, Run! say that all they had to do to distribute an app for Kickstarter backers was … ask. Apple agreed to let them have two versions of the app on the store — one just for sale, and another that was free with a password gate in it. There were two limits, however: There had to be at least some content in the password-closed app, so people who just randomly came across it weren’t confused. And Apple made the app developers take down any preorders once the app went live, so that Apple didn’t lose any sales of its own.

Good to hear that distribution this way is possible — there are a few other Kickstarter projects that will need to make use of a plan like this when they are released. The key, according to Six to Start, is to get in touch with Apple early, and keep that communication flowing.

The troubled Teen Mom star was placed back behind bars last week after violating the terms of her probation by failing to appear in an Indiana court.

The 22-year-old allegedly lied about a medical condition to get out of a drug test. Her probation officer called the bluff, asking her doctor directly.

How’s the reality star feeling now that she’s back on the other side?

“OK,” Amber told E! News. “Just hustling. I’ve got a lot on my plate.”

Naturally.

According to her brother, Shawn Portwood, Amber’s “new goal is to join the military.” Yes, apparently he’s serious. “She was going to work hard to get her charge reduced,” added Shawn. “She’s been doing so well.”

The second trailer for “Magic Mike” has just arrived, and features many of the same elements fans have already seen: Namely, Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello stripping to the mood-elevating sounds of Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” (Hey, you can never have too much of a good thing, amirite?)

Inkling is an e-book publishing platform that’s currently running an app on the App Store, and while Apple has been making an official push for more textbooks in iBooks, Inkling is strengthening its own holdings. The company has made a deal with Follett to bring hundreds of Inkling titles into college bookstores, where students can buy the ebook content right there in person.

The company is selling whole textbooks, or it’s also offering a program called “Pick 3,” which allows students to grab three chapters of a book at a time, keeping costs down if teachers or students don’t need the whole book. Overall, this may not be cheaper, however — don’t forget that students who buy real books can often have a chance to resell them, or can buy them used, and with ebooks, there’s obviously no resale value.

The Follett deal should be ready by the time students head back to school in the fall.

Apple’s attempt to wrest control the iPhone5.com domain name from the hands of a cybersquatter has been a success. TheNextWeb reports that the company’s complaint to the World Intellectual Properties Organization (WIPO) resulted in the iPhone5.com domain being handed over to Apple.

The fact that the company has re-obtained the domain name doesn’t necessarily mean that the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5, nor that Apple will ever use the domain name. In fact, the domain is currently being held by Corporation Service Company, a firm that specializes in brand protection and may have been used by Apple to grab ownership.

In the world of intellectual property law, it is considered vital for organizations to actively protect trademarks. In this case, the domain had been registered in 2008 by a group that operated an online forum. While registering the domain, the former owners noted that “it was not endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple” and was “for the sole purpose of entertainment and knowledge.”

Apple hasn’t been as aggressive in protecting other domain names. It does not own iPad.com, and hasn’t attempted to take control of the name. Apple did manage to acquire iPods.com after a protracted battle, but doesn’t own iBooks.com (publishing rival Barnes & Noble does) or iBookstore.com.

With all of Apple’s intellectual property battles raging around the world, it must feel good to win a small skirmish like this.

Proving that a split doesn’t have to be bitter or contentious just because it’s painful, the comedian opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about his recent divorce and had only positive things to say about former wife Katy Perry.

“I still love her as a human being,” he said. “But, sometimes when you’re in a relationship I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life. But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything.”

Republique is an upcoming iOS title that’s made a lot of noise by getting funded on Kickstarter recently, to the tune of half a million dollars, but I’ve had one nagging question about it: How exactly are they going to distribute the app to all of their backers? The most obvious solution would be to put a password gate inside of an app, but Apple doesn’t allow that. If you have to lock content in your app, then you’re clearly selling it outside of the App Store, which means you’re dodging Apple’s 30% cut. So what’s their plan? Republique hasn’t yet said, only that it’s still being decided.

Fortunately, however, here’s the answer. The folks behind Zombies, Run! say that all they had to do to distribute an app for Kickstarter backers was … ask. Apple agreed to let them have two versions of the app on the store — one just for sale, and another that was free with a password gate in it. There were two limits, however: There had to be at least some content in the password-closed app, so people who just randomly came across it weren’t confused. And Apple made the app developers take down any preorders once the app went live, so that Apple didn’t lose any sales of its own.

Good to hear that distribution this way is possible — there are a few other Kickstarter projects that will need to make use of a plan like this when they are released. The key, according to Six to Start, is to get in touch with Apple early, and keep that communication flowing.

Love them or hate them, those new Siri ads starring Zooey Deschanel and Samuel L. Jackson are apparently effective, says a YouGov BrandIndex report. As noted by Fortune’s Apple 2.0 blog, the celebrity Siri ads are creating buzz among 18-34 year old questioned in the survey.

In just a few weeks, the buzz score for the iPhone went from 16 on April 19 to 51 on May 4, surpassing Android on its way up. The buzz score is based on a survey of consumers who were asked whether they’ve heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, either through advertising, news or word of mouth, and whether it was it positive or negative.

In Touch can exclusively reveal that Rihanna is turning her attention over to another new man ? New York Knicks star J.R. Smith.

Multiple sources tell the new issue of In Touch, on newsstands now, that the two were spotted getting cozy at Veranda nightclub in NYC on May 6.

?They were very flirty in the club all night and holding hands,? an eyewitness who was at the hotspot tells In Touch. ?She was sitting on his lap and was really into him.?

It is believed Stahl had been frequenting the Skid Row area of Downtown Los Angeles recently … and there are concerns he may have gotten himself involved in some bad stuff.

Rose Stahl filed court papers back in February, worried that her husband may be using drugs. And if TMZ’s sources are accurate it would seem she had every reason to worry. Stahl will probably be most familiar to CBM fans for his portrayal of John Connor in Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines. If you’re like me, you’ve got a hard drive filling up with images. I do a lot of landscape photography, and while I normally shoot in RAW format, they get output as jpegs for the web, email, and the printing service I use. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of applications that will shrink jpegs, and the jpeg itself is already much smaller than anything that started out in raw, native Photoshop or TIF format.

I was offered a new OS X app called JPEGmini to test, and it is impressive. You can drag a folder of photos or even a complete hard drive onto JPEGmini and it goes to work, showing each image it opens and keeping track of how much is saved. It supports images from 2 MB to 17 MB in size, and I have some larger files so the app warned me those would not be shrunk. (Note: The developer says the limitation is resolution, not file size, so any resolution greater than 17 MP will be rejected.)

I was a bit skeptical of this shrinking process, so I opened up some of my detailed landscape images and looked at them in Photoshop. I couldn’t see any significant difference in the before and after images. I should note that I duplicated a folder of images for this test and worked on the copy, because once you shrink the photos, there is no going back. I saw more than 50% reduction in file size, and there would have been more if I didn’t have so many files in that folder larger than 17 MB. This is very nice for sending files via email because I can reduce the file size while keeping the quality.

Best of all is that your photos stay in jpg format. No program is going to have trouble opening them.

If you want some details on the process, the developers go into more depth about how the application works. Besides the file size caveat, the program only works on jpegs.

JPEGmini is US $19.99 through the Mac App Store. It’s a little pricey, but it does what it claims. It mightnot be for the pro photographer, but I think most amateur and semi-pros will be thrilled at the drive space you get back. If you’d like to see how the program works without any investment, the developers have a free service on their website where you can upload some files and let their server shrink them and return them to you.

Check the gallery for some comparison shots, but remember that these examples are further reduced in quality when we publish them.

Flipboard is the “social magazine” for iPad and iPhone that lets users browse their favorite social network sites, feeds and more in a beautiful, magazine-like interface. Version 1.9 was released this week and adds audio to the mix.

A new audio tab offers several options, like SoundCloud and shows from National Public Radio (like Fresh Air) and Public Radio International. You’ll also find podcasts and indue music from the likes of Sub Pop Records and Epitaph Records.

What’s really nice is that you can begin an audio stream and navigate away to another section of Flipboard (or even another app) while the stream continues. Version 1.9 is a free update.

Jenelle Evans is engaged. Seriously. She broke the news herself on Twitter.

The “lucky” man is Gary Head, who she dumped and dedicated this hilariously angry video to just a couple of weeks ago! How quickly times change!

No word on when theyeven  got back together, but the troubled Teen Mom 2 star revealed that she and Gary are getting married this morning.

Jenelle Evans posted a photo of the engagement ring from Head, with the message “I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have @gary_head in my life.”

Details are few and far between so far, though Jenelle has re-tweeted a bunch of people reporting that the two are engaged, so that sort of proves it.

She also replied to a follower who asked if Gary Head got the ring from a gumball machine – nicely played, follower – with a simple “no he def didn’t.”

The engagement comes out of virtually nowhere, as she and bad boy ex Kieffer Delp were back together when she had her boob job … this month.

Kieffer’s apparently out of the picture again, though, leaving Gary Head to see Jenelle Evans nude for the rest of their lives … or at least probably May.

I first saw Chillingo’s latest title, This Could Hurt, at GDC earlier this year, and back then I didn’t really get into it. It’s a one-button title that I thought looked a little too simple. But after giving it a longer try post-release, there’s actually a lot of surprising depth here. Yes, there’s only one control (touch on the screen to make your character stand still), but developers Orange Agenda do an impressive job of wringing a whole lot of gameplay out of just that one mechanic.

As your character runs along, he’ll come across lots of strange contraptions designed to hurt him, and the goal of the game is to time your stopping just right so that he isn’t harmed by whatever dangers await him. There are powerups in the game, but they mostly just involve moving slower or faster, so really, the game is just a list of ways to test your timing skills. And that list is surprisingly long. There are forty levels in the game, and each one of them puts a new spin on ways to try and avoid getting hurt.

This Could Hurt does a whole lot with very little, and on the App Store, that’s always impressive. It’s available for 99 cents right now.

See It Because: Um… well… the underground cult comedians and late-night TV stars are not for everybody (in fact they’re probably not for most people). But we find their gross-out characters and surreal, absurd filmmaking style to be as hilarious as they intend. And since this is a terrible week for home releases, we’d rather go with the movie that’s aiming to be intentionally stupid, instead of the movies that pretend to be anything other than cheap drivel.

In what may be the strangest dinner date of all time, Woody Allen and Lindsay Lohan were spotted this past weekend sharing a meal and enjoying each other’s company.

Yes. Woody and LiLo dined at Manhattan’s haute eatery Philippe, which left us scratching our heads wondering: Is Lohan set to become Allen’s newest muse?

While it wouldn’t be the first time the director threw us a casting curveball — remember Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood? — the combo of Hollywood’s consumate party girl and the eccentric moviemaker was simply too strange to ignore.

So! What did the two most dissimilar people in the world talk about on their dinner date? Below, a potential conversation.

Woody: I thought your Marilyn photographs were just terrific.

Lindsay: Thanks! Something a little different.

Woody: I adore New York City. I idolize it all out of proportion. But this is a dynamite part! You’re playing a beautiful archivist struggling with the tyrannical Dewey Decimal System.

Lindsay: What about Scarlett?

Woody: Scarlett and I had a wonderful time, but I need a new blonde in my lens.

Lindsay: Would you be in the film?

Woody: Maybe. An avuncular lemonade salesman? I’m not sure.

Lindsay: So it’s not a Mariel Hemingway thing.

Woody: No. I’m thinking your paramour will be Michael Cera. Or someone who could conceivably play a young-me.

“We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?” said Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror film, “Psycho.” In regards to a recent lawsuit, those words have never been more appropriate.

A few weeks ago, Michael Daly of the Daily Beast wrote about a fascinating case involving a man who’s been nicknamed the “Real-Life Norman Bates.” In a tale of Hitchcockian proportions, 51-year-old Thomas Parkin had beem accused of dressing up like his dead mother in an attempt to secure her $2.2 million brownstone and to cash her Social Security checks.

(Fans of “Psycho” will remember that the film’s main character had been impersonating his mother long after she had passed away. Of course, in the movie, Bates was also murdering innocent people, something Parkin was not accused of.)

The trouble began in 1997, when Irene Prusik supposedly signed over her brownstone deed to her adopted son Thomas Parkin (the house was eventually foreclosed on when he couldn’t pay the mortgage). However, things really got weird in September 2003, after Irene passed away. That’s when Thomas gave the funeral director an incorrect Social Security number for his mother. As Daly reports, this prevented “[Irene's] death from being logged in the federal database and allegedly [allowed Thomas] to collect her continuing Social Security benefits.”

Soon after, a pending lawsuit — one brought forth by Samir Chopra, the man who bought the foreclosed brownstone from the bank — began to heat up. Chopra wanted Parkin banned from the brownstone. Parkin, however, took his case to the district attorney, painting him and his (now deceased) mother as victims of fraud. But the D.A. was suspicious: He continually asked to meet with Irene Prusik, only to be rebuffed by Thomas, who said she was ill.

Eventually, Thomas Parkin relented, and D.A. investigator Vincent Verlezza went to visit Irene…with a hidden camera. The video, which you can watch over on the Daily Beast, shows Parkin dressed as his mother. The tape would later be used as evidence against Thomas. (Thomas Parkin would later admit to detectives that “I held my mother when she was dying and breathed in her last breath, so I am my mother.”)

Last week, Parkin was convicted on 11 counts, including larceny and falsifying records. He can now be sentenced to up to 83 years in prison. Although the NY Daily News states that Parkin was a fan of Bates, his lawyer maintains his innocence: “That could have been anyone,” he said, in reference to the person in the video dressed as “Irene Prusik.”

Coincidentally, a movie about the making of “Psycho” — starring Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchock and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins — is set to hit theaters in 2013.

Are you one of the many devs who miss Xcode’s “Fix and Continue” feature? Apple removed “Fix and Continue” in Xcode 4. This option allowed you to patch your binary with updated code, as you ran and debugged it.

Well, there’s good news. Developer John Holdsworth has released Injection for Xcode. It’s an OS X application that lets you inject those same code changes into running applications for development and debugging. It works with both OS X and iOS apps, including those running on devices.

It works by allowing your classes to be recompiled selectively as class categories. These are loaded at run time via bundles, and override your originally compiled code. So you can modify, enhance, and adapt your code during run time and tweak elements on the go.

Holdsworth has been working with this feature for quite a long time. He writes:

In London there were two banks which embraced NeXT for developing front office trading systems in an age before even windows 3.1. The hardware was only just up to it however and build times where at three quarters of an hour so we started using this means of patching the app using bundles rather having to relink the whole thing.

I asked him to fill in some of his background about working with Apple and NeXT technology. He responded:

I first encountered NeXT in 1989 at IRCAM the computer/music research institute in Paris where I fell in love with Objective-C. It’s great to see things coming full circle with all this memory managed stuff, and C++, such a half baked language falling away.

How ironic that it should be a mobile device which paved the way. If you ask me the closest we’ve been to Object-Oriented Nirvana is Smalltalk, and Objective-C is pretty close to that.

Steve visited one day spinning the reality distortion field about the new “autorelease” mechanism. Quite the mystic.

My only other claim to fame was when the Apple purchase of NeXT came through I sent him an email enthusing greatly and got a reply saying “Thanks John, a Merry Christmas to you and your family.”

Been a disciple ever since. Shame I didn’t buy the stock.

Unfortunately, Apple has been a bit squirrelly about letting Injection into the OS. Holdsworth first hoped to start selling Injection on the Mac App Store back in February. Apple has been sitting on the app for months, failing to give it a thumbs up or down.

The Guardian reports that, while there won’t be anything from Skyfall, they are screening 5 classic Bond films on the beach during the festival. As a huge Bond fan (who just visited the set of Skyfall) this is heaven. Watching some of the best Bond films on a beach? It’s heaven!

Skyfall, being directed by Sam Mendes, has nearing complete on production and is entering post-production throughout the summer to makes its November release. So in the meantime, Eon Productions is bringing the classic Bond films …

It hasn’t been announced yet, but “The Avengers” is getting a sequel. (You don’t go breaking all those box-office records only to bow out early.)
